A Night Out with The Kim Foundation

The Kim Foundation graciously invited me and five other talented artists to create pieces that spoke to the foundation’s thru-line of suicide prevention and awareness.
My painting explained a story of hope and compassion after hard conversations. The power of simply meeting a friend for coffee can help in more ways than we expect; by just listening. When two people are talking there’s actually three people present; you, me and us.
Without focusing on the facial expressions of the intimate moment within the painting it forces us to see the beauty of what’s been brought to the table. Metaphor or coffee, you tell me.

A deeper dive behind the painting.
My dad once said that when two people are having a conversation there’s actually three people present.
Person A (me)
Person B (them) and
Person C (us)
Opening up with someone about the ideas ruminating in our minds or discussing larger than life topics that no cappuccino could fully explain is something everyone should practice.
The perspectives that people hold are original, confusing, independent, interesting and allowed and we should be open to hearing each other out.
When I created this painting, I wanted to give the viewer a reason to call a friend. I wanted to give them permission to take the time to listen, hear and try to understand that person’s past, present and future journey.
Being vulnerable in conversation is something I think everybody should do. Asking for help, asking for an opinion, or simply opening up to someone about big and sometimes scary subjects is vital for our health and well-being. Whether we’re the listener or the speaker, being there for others helps more than we imagine.
When we find ways to form a bridge to each other’s worlds, lifestyles and resiliences, that is when real moments happen. That is when once in a lifetime opportunities arise giving that third person at the table a single thread that Person A & Person B formed.
Sure, there may be several ideas and concepts that we may not agree with or understand but simply sitting with someone and listening to their why is something that I truly feel is important.
I can wholeheartedly say that I’ve never regretted having a cup of coffee & a piece of cake with someone and I believe I never will. So take the time to ask someone to coffee this week as your third person at the table is waiting.
Being at the Kim Foundation was such a surreal moment in time. Being amongst extremely talented artists in Omaha was such an experience in itself and I’m eternally grateful to have been a small part of the night.
